At their meeting held in Johannesburg, South Africa on 12th June 2011, the Heads of State and Governments of COMESA, EAC and SADC agreed to adopt a developmental approach to the Tripartite integration process. The process is anchored on three pillars namely: Market Integration based on the Tripartite Free Trade Area (FTA); Infrastructure Development to enhance connectivity and reduce costs of doing business; and Industrial Development to address productive capacity and supply-side constraints. The Summit directed that a programme of work and a roadmap be developed on the industrial development pillar.
A Work Programme/Road Map is currently under development by Member/Partner States and will be instrumental in guiding the implementation of the Industrial Development Pillar. The preparation of the Work Programme/Road Map takes into account recommendations of the Tripartite Policy Organs decisions; and existing regional and continental industrial development policy frameworks and programmes, including the EAC Industrialisation Strategy, COMESA regional value chain strategies, the SADC Industrial Development Policy Framework, the Africa Agro-business and Agro-industry Development Initiatives (3ADI); and the Accelerated Industrial Development of Africa (AIDA). The Work Programme/Road Map will complement and create synergies with national industrial policies.
This database of regional and national industrial policies aims to share key official documents from the Tripartite region with policy makers, private sector, researchers, and any interested party.
